Fred is a new bar in Lambrate, unique in its type (at least in Milan) for the combination of food, records and drinks. The music that joins you during your lunch or aperitivo is also on sale. The place is warm and different than what you find elsewhere in the city. Fred is worth the visit, from lunch to late at night.

Fred, the neighbor that you want to have

A few weeks ago I’ve met Fred for the first time. Right from the start he gave me the feeling that we had to know each other better. We could have been neighbors if it wasn’t me that decided to move from Lambrate to discover other areas of Milan. However the area is still important to me. I come here a few times a week to go to my coworking and there are some places that I find worth a detour. Even though Fred arrived long after my departure, he opened only at the end of November 2019, I decided to visit him and present myself as his former neighbor.

Food, music and drinks in Lambrate

The first encounter between me and Fred was on a Friday night in January. I just finished my first work week of the new year and I wanted to celebrate this event. We arrived early and ordered two cocktails. A campari spritz, available in every self-respecting bar in Milan and a non-alcoholic one. Usually I find the non-alcoholic cocktails too sweet, but Fred has convinced me and served me a nice, bitter one. Good work guys! As a snack they brought us chips, peanuts, olives and small slice of pizza. Nothing special but perfect to accompany the early evening drink.

During the aperitif a dj joined us and brought us the perfect music for the time of the day. An hour in which you mainly come for a chat with your partner or friend. I can imagine that the later it gets, the more the music will invite Fred’s visitors to try a small dance.

Once leaving, Fred told us that the kitchen is open for lunch as well as for dinner, from 7pm onwards. So if you want you can decide to have a more consistent aperitivo or stay for dinner. I decided to come back for lunch soon.

The menu of Fred

Fred opens at the end of the morning, right in time to fix an appointment at his place and then decide to stay for lunch. The place makes you feel comfortable and has a good view over the bustling Via Porpora (the facade is all glass). Its interior design is well-thought, with a green/blue wall, wooden panel-style furniture. The two window-less walls are used for the bar and to display the vinyl on sale in Freds’ record store open each day from h15 to h20.

The menu is composed by appetizers, salads, some proposals of the day and burgers. Don’t expect to find the usual burgers here. You won’t even find the ‘classic’ beef burger at Freds’. On the menu you find everything from ‘Kimbo’ a burger made with chickpeas with vegan mayonnaise served on charcoal bread to the ‘Carnefici’, a burger served on a typical Milanese michetta bread with raw meat from the Fassona cow, dried tomatoes and mustard. All prepared at the moment with quality ingredients.

It was a pleasure to get to know Fred and I would say that he is a perfect neighbor. Don’t hesitate to visit him too so you get to know him better.
