There is a small place – la sTorta – situated in a lively street in the Lambrate neighborhood and just a few minutes away from the Politecnico di Milano. Passing by you can’t ignore the neon-signs on the facade indicating the name of the place. La sTorta is italian for crooked, or: not straight. A name chosen on purpose as the products come from the oven and might thus not look perfect. But that definitely does not influence their quality.

Pies and cakes in the Lambrate area
Federico, the founder of la sTorta is the son of pastry-bakers. A little more than a year ago he decided to follow the paths of his parents. But in his own way. He found a small place in Lambrate, almost the size of a kitchen-diner. It is situated in a lively area, half-way the train and metro station Lambrate and the Politecnico di Milano. Even though it is small, the size of the place is perfect for serving cakes and pies to his clients and to prepare them for those who want to take them away.
Each day another piece of cake
The menu changes daily. Federico prepare both sweet and hearty pies and cakes. For the lunch there are three very interesting options. You can choose to eat between one and three cakes, accompanied by a bottle of water and a coffee. This all for very reasonable prices. The best thing to do off-course is arrive with at least in two and make a selection of different cakes in order to be able to try all of them.
Menu of the day
I brought two friends and we did as suggested above. We’ve ordered four hearty pies: one with pumpkin and bacon, one with potatoes and mushrooms and one with zucchini and dried tomatoes. All very good, each of them in their own way. To finish the lunch in the right way, we decided to also order a sweet cake. We tried both the cake with nuts and honey as well as a very particular but nice one: with a cream of coffee-flavoured mascarpone. All this has satisfied us and our stomachs, eating well while spending just a small amount of money.
The ‘crooked pies and cakes’ are all very delicious, offered at honest prices and served with passion. I look forward to come back!
