A new generation of bakeries is born in Milan. Man or woman, the baker 2.0 produces high quality bread, risen for hours thanks to the use of sourdough with specially selected flours. Small (like LePolveri) or big, you can now find them everywhere in the city. It is time to start to discover them.

Micro, but really micro
Coming from the chaotic Via Papiano, it is quite a contrast to enter in the tranquil Via Ausonio. You might even feel disorientated a bit. The street, paved with the traditional Milanese pavè tiles, is often forgotten but at the same time well-known. I hadn’t been there for a while and was surprised to see the wide range of quality shops that one can find in this street, situated on the south side of Milan’s city centre. To arrive at LePolveri, one has to follow the street until after the crossing with Via Ariberto and then, at a sudden, you will see the sign of the micro-bakery.
After parking my bike, I entered and couldn’t resist to ask immediately to explain me all about the different types of bread on sale. Even though LePolveri is a micro-bakery, the choice is very large: wholemeal and rye bread (the latter also available in cassetta, so made in a bread tin), wholemeal bread with seeds, bread with sultana and other fruits, delicious focaccia and so on. The types of bread available change from day to day so there is always a reason to pass-by. Also those with sweet teeth can satisfy their needs here: besides the large choice of cookies available all week long, they also make pastries with original flavours and perfect for breakfast during the weekend. Enjoy them with a good coffee and you are ready to start your day.
Still warm
Still warm I couldn’t off course enter this place and not leave with some bread to taste at home. I choose to try the wholemeal bread, a rye bread in cassetta and a package of cookies made with oatmeal and chia seeds. The bread, which was still warm when they delivered it to me, was really good and it doesn’t need much to really enjoy it. I just added some good quality butter and I was more than fine. It is difficult not to finish it all in the same day, but even when you have something left, it is no problem at all. The bread remains good also for a few days.
LePolveri is another excuse for going in Via Ausonio and even though I am sure it will remain a quiet street, you shouldn’t be surprised when soon you will find people waiting in line outside LePolveri and Via Ausonio becomes a place to go to!
