“I always try to avoid chain-stores and restaurants as they usually lack a soul. For GUD Citylife I decided to make an exception. Here I’ve both eaten a delicious lunch as well as enjoyed the positive vibe in the middle of contemporary architecture in Milan “

GUD: like a festival in Milan
On a sunny Sunday in June I decided to jump on my bike and ride to GUD Citylife in Milan. For me this means going all the way to the other side of town, but I don’t mind as I am curious to follow the developments in this new area in town.
The place (except the bar and a small veranda, most of it is uncovered) is the hinge between the social garden called Orto Fiorito and the contemporary architecture of Citylife. Even though GUD is situated in the shadow of the Tre Torri (or three towers, in English) designed by starchitects Hadid, Isozaki and Libeskind and the luxury residences on the other side, at GUD Citylife Milan you seem to be on a summer festival. The fact that white/blue striped umbrellas dominate the view do off-course contribute to this.
Simple but good dishes
The lunch menu is short. They do propose 5 types of focaccia, 3 different salads and a selection of so called cirasci bowls. The latter one being an interpretation of GUD of the classical japonese chirashi. Traditionally this is a bowl filled with rice and other ingredients, amongst which raw fish. There is no specific way in which it has to be presented: after the rice one just fills the bowl with that what accompanies the rice. In the version introduced by GUD they use different types of cooked rice (not only the one traditionally used for sushi), served with ingredients from the Italian and Mediterrenean kitchen as well as with ingredients from international kitchens. In this way they create original dishes, adapted to the season.
The focacce (typical italian bread) are of first quality, realised with a dough of organic wholemeal flour and risen in a natural way for at least 24hours and the cirasci bowl are both beautiful to see and delicious when eaten.
And if you are worried about your next appearance on the beach: no need to! At GUD they also prepare natural juice extractions so even if your on a diet, you can enjoy life here.
Life is really GUD
GUD Citylife is the perfect place for a relaxing afternoon or a night amongst friends. It is the ideal solution for those who don’t have the time or the methods to escape from the city but wants to get the most out of the summer. Unless the spartan furniture they have managed to create different atmospheres between the wooden tables with chairs and stools, the beach chairs and the hay bales. You can decide to enjoy the view over the romantic garden ‘Orto Fiorito’ or admire the new towers by starchitects Hadid, Libeskind and Isozaki. The only reason to get out of your chair is to order a new drink or some food. For the rest life is GUD!
